Leadership Community Empowerment Collaboration and Dialogue
ORGL 522 deepened my understanding of leadership as a community-driven practice, emphasizing belonging, trust, and accountability. The monastic immersion at St. Andrew’s Abbey showcased the power of rhythm, reflection, and humility in fostering alignment and growth. Inspired by this, I introduced a morning reflection period for my team, enhancing focus and engagement, while also shifting toward servant leadership, empowering my team through trust and delegation. The course also reinforced the role of psychological safety and trust in effective leadership. Parker Palmer’s insights led me to advocate for more transparency and inclusivity, while The Leadership Challenge helped me refocus accountability on growth rather than punishment. Recognizing the power of rituals in team cohesion, I implemented structured recognition and goal check-ins, strengthening our collective identity. These lessons have shaped my leadership, fostering an environment where individuals feel valued, connected, and motivated.

The “12 Steps of Organizational Health” artifact created during the monastery immersion encapsulates the core leadership competencies I gained in ORGL 522, reinforcing the connection between leadership, community, and organizational well-being. The emphasis on ethical leadership, humility, and conscientiousness mirrors the monastic values of servant leadership, while principles like patience in adversity, a growth mindset, and purposeful engagement reflect the structured discipline and reflective practices I observed at St. Andrew’s Abbey. Encouraging a culture of feedback and active listening aligns with my learning on psychological safety, ensuring open communication and accountability within a team. Additionally, the focus on kindness, effective communication, and teamwork highlights the importance of fostering trust and collaboration, both in monastic life and within an organization. This artifact serves as a practical guide for cultivating a workplace culture where individuals feel valued, empowered, and connected to a shared purpose, key lessons that continue to shape my leadership journey.
Bonus, its an actual picture I took while at the abbey!
